To mark The Lowry Foundation’s 25th anniversary, the organization is creating a dynamic community art project dubbed the Lowry Art + Architecture Loop. Combined with Lowry’s historic architecture, the four-mile loop will feature four temporary public art projects to encourage and promote well-being and active mobility for residents and visitors and bring people together. The Lowry Foundation has not installed public art in over 12 years since the Denver Urban Renewal Authority provided funds during the redevelopment of the Lowry Air Force Base.
What: The first art installation along the Lowry Art + Architecture Loop. Several temporary ground murals will be painted on the sidewalks surrounding the Lowry sundial sculpture and along the Westerly Creek Trail. The paintings will be visible for at least three months and may last through the winter.
Who: Professional artist, Yazz, led High School students in a free, three-day workshop to develop design ideas for a site-specific ground mural and worked with students to sketch designs and prepare for painting outdoors. The participating students attend various schools, including Bishop Machebeuf, George Washington, Regis Jesuit, Denver School of the Arts, and St. Mary’s high schools.
When: Tuesday, July 18 through Thursday, July 20, 7:00 to 11:30 a.m.
How: The Lowry Art + Architecture Loop project is funded by the P.S. You Are Here grant program by Denver Arts and Venues, sponsorship from Clark’s Market Lowry, and in-kind sponsorship from the Museum of Outdoor Arts.
Next Steps: The other three parks creating the loop include: Crescent Park, the open space surrounding Lowry Dog Park, and Bayaud Park. Those art installations will occur over the next few weeks into August. After the public art projects are installed in the four parks, The Lowry Foundation will hold a ribbon cutting and offer guided and self-guided tours.
