SUMMARY:Blues for an Alabama Sky
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Lowry Foundation Starbright Community Grant recipient\, The John Hand Theater and Firehouse Theater Company\nIt is the summer of 1930 in Harlem\, New York. The creative euphoria of the Harlem Renaissance has given way to the harsher realities of the Great Depression. The play brings together a rich cast of characters who reflect the conflicting currents of the time through their overlapping personalities and politics. Set in the Harlem apartment of Guy\, a popular costume designer\, and his friend\, Angel\, a recently fired Cotton Club back-up singer\, the cast also includes Sam\, a jazz-loving doctor at Harlem Hospital; Delia\, an equally dedicated member of the staff at the Sanger clinic; and Leland\, a recent transplant from Tuskegee\, who sees in Angel a memory of lost love. Invoking the image of African American expatriate extraordinaire\, Josephine Baker as both muse and myth\, Cleage’s characters struggle\, as Guy says\, “to look beyond 125th Street” for the fulfillment of their dreams. — Dramatists Play Service \nStarring\nJysten Atom\nMarissa Joy Leotaud\nJohnathan Underwood\nNadiya Jackson\nJozeph Mykeals \nTickets\nOnline: https://firehousetheatercompany.ticketspice.com/blues-for-an-alabama-sky\nPhone Reservations: (303) 562-3232\nEmail: firehousetc@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Historic Eisenhower Chapel and Lowry Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:On September 30\, 1994\, Lowry Air Force Base officially closed its gates\, but the history still lives on. Join us for a special afternoon that revisits Lowry’s Air Force days and explores the community that has grown from its legacy.  Begin with a keynote presentation from Jim Lusche inside the Eisenhower Chapel\, followed by a guided walking tour of original Air Force buildings still standing today. Many of these landmarks have been thoughtfully repurposed\, blending historic preservation with modern community needs—each with stories to tell. \nFree to attend (suggested donation at your discretion).  Your contribution supports the Lowry Foundation’s Art & Legacy Committee\, which preserves the historic Eisenhower Chapel\, installs plaques at historically significant sites\, and maintains public art throughout the Lowry community. \nCome walk through history with us and discover how Lowry’s past continues to shape it’s present.

SUMMARY:Music is Poetry: Browne\, Kristofferson\, Lennon\, McCartney\, and Nelson
DESCRIPTION:Poetry has no single definition\, but we believe that music with lyrics is a form of poetry\, presented in a musical template. The intermingling of words and melody has historic potency and has been going on for centuries. In this course\, we explore how iconic singer-songwriters use poetic devices to create powerful art. Through audio and video\, we’ll dive into the work of four legendary 20th-century songwriters\, Jackson Browne\, Kris Kristofferson\, John Lennon and Paul McCartney\, and Willie Nelson\, and examine how their lyrics function as poetry. Expect plenty of music as we discover the timeless connection between words and melody. \nThis is an OLLI on the Move course\, featured off-site courses happening throughout the Devner area. OLLI at DU membership is NOT REQUIRED for these special courses\, so bring a friend! \nLearn more and register here – https://ollidenver.du.edu/duolli/course/course.aspx?C=1051&pc=6&mc=195&sc=0
