SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Living with Public Art
DESCRIPTION:The Lowry Foundation Speaker Series presents a conversation between two experts in the public art field\, Michael Chavez\, Manager of the Public Art Program and Collection for the City and County of Denver\, and public artist Patrick Marold. Join us for this lively conversation about public art in our community and the challenges of ensuring the artworks survive to create a legacy. \n\n\nDid you know Lowry has nearly 25 public artworks dotting the parks\, medians\, and walls? The Lowry Foundation owns and is charged with taking care of most of the art in Lowry\, and it is a challenging task. Come to this Speaker Series event to hear more about how and why we care for these community assets. Hear from two of Colorado’s foremost leaders in the public art industry. Yes\, public art is an industry in Colorado! Denver alone has nearly 500 public artworks\, and it is estimated that Colorado has 25 municipal public art programs with upwards of 2\,500 public artworks in the community. \n\n\nJoin us early for a meet and greet with the speakers and enjoy wine and beer with light snacks. RSVP is requested to plan for refreshments. Scroll down to RSVP. \n\n\n6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Meet and greet7:00 p.m. Conversation \nA big thank you goes to our Speaker Series sponsor\, COPIC\, and the evening’s refreshments are sponsored by our 2023 Star Partner\, Clark’s Market Lowry.\n \nAbout the Public Art Collection in Lowry\nThe Lowry Foundation owns 15 pieces of outdoor public art\, ranging from large sculptural bus stops to horses prancing a median. The first artwork was installed 20 years ago. Denver Urban Renewal Authority funded most of the public art when Lowry was being redeveloped from an air force base into a neighborhood. Local families donated the other artworks. Care for public art in Lowry can cost upwards of $20\,000 annually\, and the Foundation has to fundraise the costs. See pictures of the artwork on our website. \nPictured:\nLowry’s “Flight Ride” bus shelter sculpture by Erick Johnson\nQuebec Street between E. 2nd Ave. and Lowry Blvd.\nBefore Restoration July 2023 \n \nAfter Restoration August 2023

SUMMARY:Blues for an Alabama Sky
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Lowry Foundation Starbright Community Grant recipient\, The John Hand Theater and Firehouse Theater Company\nIt is the summer of 1930 in Harlem\, New York. The creative euphoria of the Harlem Renaissance has given way to the harsher realities of the Great Depression. The play brings together a rich cast of characters who reflect the conflicting currents of the time through their overlapping personalities and politics. Set in the Harlem apartment of Guy\, a popular costume designer\, and his friend\, Angel\, a recently fired Cotton Club back-up singer\, the cast also includes Sam\, a jazz-loving doctor at Harlem Hospital; Delia\, an equally dedicated member of the staff at the Sanger clinic; and Leland\, a recent transplant from Tuskegee\, who sees in Angel a memory of lost love. Invoking the image of African American expatriate extraordinaire\, Josephine Baker as both muse and myth\, Cleage’s characters struggle\, as Guy says\, “to look beyond 125th Street” for the fulfillment of their dreams. — Dramatists Play Service \nStarring\nJysten Atom\nMarissa Joy Leotaud\nJohnathan Underwood\nNadiya Jackson\nJozeph Mykeals \nTickets\nOnline: https://firehousetheatercompany.ticketspice.com/blues-for-an-alabama-sky\nPhone Reservations: (303) 562-3232\nEmail: firehousetc@gmail.com
